2009 Competition Overview
![]()
The goal is advance imaging technology to develop a Connectome Map, a comprehensive structural/functional description of the network elements and connections forming the human brain.
We will provide a comprehensive data set of 4 individuals to be the basis for brain segmentation, functional identification, and fiber tracings. Groups from all nations and disciplines are encouraged to participate.
Awardees will be required to describe their methods, provide results, and either present the methods or provide written descriptions at the Competition Workshop at the Organization for Human Brain Mapping being held June 18-22, 2009 in San Francisco, California, USA.
There will be four challenge specific prizes of $3000 each in the areas of: #1) cortex areas segmentation, #2) fiber bundle segmentation, #3) between subject registration and topology and #4) advanced diffusion analysis of fiber tracts. Researchers can enter in any combination of the challenges and can win in multiple categories (if one group won in all four categories the total would be $12,000). The change to four changes was made due to: a) the four challenges use very different methods typically residing in different expertise groups and it would be difficult to create top cross discipline teams in the short time available, b) it was hard to devise a viable aggregate score to weight each challenge, and c) given the short time, a Researcher could focus on the area of their single greatest strength. We expect the awards to be made on the basis of quantitative scores on these challenges.
Entrants will have access to the data and will be allowed/encouraged to publish any findings derived from their analysis. Each entry will be scored on multiple quantitative metrics and the participant will receive their ranking on each metric relative to the leading methods in the field.
